Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to increase the volume and fullness of the breasts. It is typically chosen to balance body proportions, boost self-confidence, or restore fullness lost due to pregnancy, weight loss or aging.

This aesthetic operation is usually performed with silicone implants or transfer of the patient’s own fat tissue (harvested via liposuction). Silicone implants come in different shapes, sizes and fill materials to suit personal preferences. Fat injection is a popular alternative for those seeking a natural appearance.

The operation is performed by an expert plastic surgeon under general anesthesia, planned considering the patient’s physical structure and aesthetic expectations. Recovery varies by patient, but most can return to daily activities within a few weeks.

Breast Augmentation Process

First, you are examined. Then, together with your doctor, you decide on the size, shape and placement of the implant.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 1.5 hours.

After the operation, a shaping bra is applied and you are taken to your room. You stay in the hospital for at most one day.

We recommend sleeping on your back at a 30-45 degree elevation for the first 3 days after surgery.

You take oral painkillers and antibiotics for five days.

You can shower on the 3rd day after surgery, and your dressing is changed the same day. There are no stitches to remove.

The bra should be worn for 3-6 weeks.

What are the Breast Augmentation Methods?

If a woman has small breasts and wants permanent enlargement, the safest method today is surgery. Two main methods are used: fat injection and breast implants. Breast implants are the gold standard for breast augmentation.

Fat Injection Breast Augmentation

Fat injection for breast augmentation is applicable to a limited patient group. It is particularly useful for increasing cleavage fullness, correcting small asymmetries and shape deformities. Disadvantages include infection risk, limited volume gain, often requiring a second session, and complicating diagnostic approaches for breast diseases.

Implant Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation with implants is aesthetic surgery to increase breast size and shape. Silicone implants placed under the breast create a fuller and more aesthetic appearance.

Are Silicone Breast Implants Safe?

Extensive research worldwide has concluded that there is no evidence that silicone implants cause any major diseases. Silicone is the least allergenic substance known and allergic reactions are not expected. It has no known side effects on milk production or breast diseases (including cancer).

Do Implants Need Periodic Replacement?

Older saline implants developed deformations over time (approximately 5-10 years). However, modern cohesive gel silicone implants do not have this issue. The only exception is capsular contracture.

What is Capsular Contracture?

The body recognizes the implant as a foreign object and creates a physiological barrier around it to contain it. In 0.5-1% of patients, this barrier forms excessively and becomes a capsule. In advanced cases, the breast shape becomes distorted.

How is Capsular Contracture Treated?

Below a certain level, no intervention is needed. For advanced cases causing breast deformity, treatment involves cutting or removing the capsule and simultaneously replacing the implant. If the implant was initially placed under the breast, it may be repositioned under the muscle in the second surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is breast augmentation permanent?

Silicone implants maintain their shape for many years. However, implant lifespan varies per individual and evaluation every 10-15 years is recommended.

How long is the recovery process?

Initial rest for 1 week, light activity at 3-4 weeks, full recovery at 6-8 weeks. Return to work is usually possible within 7-10 days.

Which implant size is right for me?

Implant selection is determined together with Op. Dr. Ercan Demirbağ based on your body structure, current breast size and expectations.
