What is Scar Revision?
Scar revision is the process of making an existing scar more acceptable. Complete elimination of a scar is not possible today. However, the size of the scar can be reduced, its shape changed or it can be hidden. Patient expectations are very important. If the patient expects complete disappearance, we recommend against surgery as expectations cannot be met.
Techniques
Different techniques can be applied depending on the location, shape, age and characteristics of the scar. Some scars return near their original appearance even after surgery. For small improvements, alternative treatments are more appropriate. In keloid scars, recurrence rates are high (approximately 90%). Post-surgical treatments can reduce this rate, but this patient group should seriously consider before surgery.
Recovery Process
After scar revision, redness in the surgical area gradually decreases over 3-6 months. The scar then takes on skin color. Silicone gel, silicone sheets, pressure garments or creams can be used after 10 days. Sun protection is especially important during the first 6 months.
